President Abraham Lincoln was well-known for his penchant to pardon. On the fate of Nathaniel Gordon, a man convicted of engaging in the slave trade, Lincoln chose to withhold this power, despite public pressure to commute his sentence to life in prison. This 1862 incident highlights President Lincoln's increasing willingness to take public stands against the institution of slavery as the Civil War waged on. For educators, it allows students to grapple with issues of life, death, and morality.
